You really will be spoilt for choice on beautiful Norfolk Island. Around every corner you will be delighted with somewhere new to explore, and stunning scenery to enjoy. Here are some of our favourite picnic spots!
Hundred Acres – a lovely lush rainforest with a wonderful walking track out to the cliff top with views back toward the Kingston area. Here you will be able to find a private and tranquil spot to lay out your picnic blanket, and amongst the flora and fauna, feel like you really are the only people on earth.
Salt House – a beautiful spot under some shady Norfolk Island pines. On the left is the island’s favourite beach ‘Emily Bay’ and on the right are views out to Slaughter Bay and Kingston Pier. Picnic tables available and lovely grassy areas to enjoy. You can safely leave your belongings and picnic food in your chosen spot as you enjoy a leisurely stroll along the beach or perhaps take a relaxing dip in the sea.
Puppies Point – this is THE place to be for sunset. A long stretch of cliff top that offers both picnic tables and grassed areas to sit and look out to sea. Facilities also available.
Captain Cook – this is by far one of our favourites! This area is the landing spot of Captain James Cook, marked by a monument on this site. There are plenty of picnic tables, grassy areas to sit, but most importantly it has views for days! There are great viewing platforms, so pack the camera, and it has some great coastal walking tracks to work off that picnic lunch.
Munnas – located within the Kingston historic area, this picnic spot is Oceanside and has wonderful views of the Kingston Pier (which is located next door) and out to Phillip and Nepean Islands. There are picnic tables and bathroom facilities nearby.
Anson Bay – with views out to one of the Island’s secluded beaches, this picnic spot has it all. The reserve at the top has picnic tables and toilet facilities on site, and you can catch a great sunset from this spot. If you are feeling adventurous, take a hike down the walking track to Anson Bay (for active fitness level). This beach is not recommended for visitors as tides can be quite forceful.
Mount Pitt – if you want to feel like king of the world, then this is the spot for you. Located at the top of the mountain, with 360 degree views of the island. You can drive right up to this picnic spot, and there are picnic tables at the top so you can sit back, unpack and take it all in.
Two Chimneys Reserve – just past the Two Chimneys Winery, you will find a little gem that offers ocean glimpses amongst lovely greenery. There are some picnic tables here, and plenty of space to lay out your blanket. A small walk down a steep hill will take you to a lovely look out to Ball Bay area.
Headstone – There are three reserves on the Headstone side of the island to choose from, two of which have bathroom facilities. Simply choose your view, sit back and relax with cliff top views under the pines.
These are just a few of the wonderful spots you will find around this picturesque island. The island is adorned with reserves and national parks, and they are all easily accessible for all. On the day of your picnic we would recommend looking at the direction of the wind, choosing the side of the island that is likely to be sheltered and simply jumping in your car and picking a spot as you drive. It is amazing what treasures you can find.
In case of inclement weather on the day of your picnic, we can provide access to an undercover BBQ area amongst the gardens at Poinciana Cottages (located opposite the airport) so that you can still relax and enjoy your experience.
Local artisan goat cheese producers, The Hilli Goat practices true paddock to plate living. Tour their beautiful cliff top farm, watch the milking and cheese making, meet the hilarious goats, and then relax to a scrumptious buffet with foods picked straight from the garden – it doesn’t get any fresher then that! Book your tour at the Norfolk Island Tourist Bureau.
With over 38 years of experience in butchery and fine meats, Slick & Sons boutique butchery sells both local and imported meat, mouth-watering deli goods and local fruit and veg. A one stop shop for a fantastic meal. Visit the butchery at 22 Douglas Drive.
Anson’s Larder provides homemade local produce and fresh flowers. Find them at the local farmers market on Saturday morning, and enjoy their famous yoghurt bursting with seasonal flavours or pick up Beeswax Food Wraps for an eco-friendly memento for home.
